Great but not Perfect! Written by A. Duda from Apr 28, 2010
I bought the hide and seek monkey (and 2 extra wands) for my best friend's daughter, who is 3 1/2 years old and who LOVES to play hide and seek. Typically, I'd end up in closets, bathrooms, and behind couches while we played (I'm 40; this isn't as much fun as when I was a kid!). I thought that hiding a monkey would be a much better tactic. She LOVED this toy! Unfortunately, though, it is made from hard plastic (not very toddler-friendly), and a back foot broke off during the first week. Also, the sound the wands make is shrill and annoying for adults, especially when you have multiple wands going.
I've just ordered the new, plush, "junior" version with the tiger for my toddler-friend. It looks like the wands for the regular version will probably not work with the tiger, but if the tiger works out, I'll probably order my beloved little friend some other junior hide and seek toys and more wands.
I do think that the price is reasonable, and I'm thrilled that there are new, soft versions with better, more naturalistic sounds (assuming the description is accurate). If you're buying for a toddler, I"d go with the new junior version. But this monkey was certainly a great start and introduction!
Great Family Fun! Written by karenobc from Plantation, FL United States Feb 11, 2010
My daughter (7 years old) received this gift for Christmas while visiting her grandparents. She was the only child amongst a group of adults, but that did not discourage use of this toy. We each took turns hiding the monkey and then finding the monkey when she hid it. We played with it for almost two hours, but eventually ran out of new hiding places in the small house. It's one gift that she continues to WANT to play with even months after Christmas is over.
It's a great toy in that it combines the excitement of electronics and the element of hide & seek with an adorable monkey. His head turns, his arms and legs move and his tail twists around, making it very easy to perch or hang him anywhere. The LED on the wand works quite well: bright red lights and a loud beep indicate when the monkey is near, although it did NOT pick up the signal through the refrigerator door (we were running out of hiding places!). However, it WAS able to signal when the monkey was in the dryer, as well as when it was hanging overhead on the ceiling fan.
Both parts require batteries and do not shut off automatically. So I suggest a parent ensure both monkey and wand are turned off when play is finished, or the batteries will be dead the next time you want to play.
I highly recommend this toy. Great family fun!
21st Century Hide and Seek Written by ChiefT from Florida USA Jan 11, 2010
This was a Christmas gift to grandchildren 3 and 5. It was a big hit....came out of the box ready to go when turned on. Kids that it was fun ferreting out those hiding places. It went home with the grandchildren and I have been told that the neighborhood had a big hide and seek session. Will defintely buy a second for our house to help keep the grandchildren occupied when staying over. I would say it teaches deductive skills along the way.
lotsa fun Written by M. Gifford from Ohio Jan 09, 2010
I got this for my 4 year old grandson for Christmas, and we had a blast. We didn't have any of the problems other reviewers mentioned with not being able to find it if it was under blankets, etc, and we didn't have a problem with other electronics interfering. We just had fun. Of course, my grandson turned the tables on us and insisted on hiding it while we searched for it. The box advertises a T-Rex toy also, but the monkey is good. He took it home with him, and hasn't been back out due to the weather, but his mom hasn't told me of any problems yet. We haven't had it long enough to determine how durable it is, but it seems sturdy enough. The limbs are poseable, so I could hang it partway in the dogfood bag (or other places). Educational? Who knows.
Love, Love, Love it! Written by R. B. Gibson from KNOXVILLE, TN, US Dec 30, 2009
One of the best toys I have ever purchased! Two girls age 4 and 5 are totally in love with it as well. They play with this toy for hours without losing interest, and they stay active!
